           Feb 4/08: The Light Rail Committee: Property Taxes Will Quadruple Over The Next Decade ...

          A group calling itself the Light Rail Committee is calling on
          Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon to resign.

          They claim Falcon made misleading, politically-motivated statements
          this past Friday.The group maintains the Minister's claims are not
          supported by modern, global transportation knowledge.

          Chairman Malcolm Johnston says Skytrain does not carry more people;
          it's not faster and it costs more to operate than light rail. Johnston
          adds, building light metro on transit routes that don't have ridership
          to support the mode guarantees that property taxes will not only
          double or triple but quadruple over the next decade.

          Using figures from Translink's own reports, the LRC says the
          percentage of people who use public transit has stagnated at about 12
          percent. Therefore, the group maintains, it doesn't make sense to pour
          money into the Skytrain pit. |
